My Impression of Architecture in San Francisco and Differences to Japan

Hello, I’m Maki Dan. In Japan, I’m studying architecture and majoring in structural engineering and disaster prevention, especially for earthquakes. Right now I’m in San Francisco, working at Wcities as an editorial intern for one month. Although I am in San Francisco for a very short time, I’ve experienced a lot and have seen many beautiful buildings. I’d like to write about buildings in San Francisco and their differences to Japanese buildings, based on my feelings and knowledge about architecture. In addition, I’d like to write about some of my experiences here.

City level

urban design

This is a view from Coit Tower. San Francisco’s urban design is grid pattern. This kind of grid design can also be seen in many other cities in the United States. In Japan, we also have a city which has a grid pattern, Kyoto. In Japanese, Kyoto is translated as “Goban-No-Me”, which means Go equipment (Go is a popular board game mainly played in Asia). I have been to Kyoto once, and I found that both Kyoto and San Francisco have some similarities. Continue reading

How to be a Tourist in San Francisco

Hi everybody! My name is Hannes Huebener and I’m from from Leipzig, Germany. The other day I faced an urgent problem when my parents came to visit me in San Francisco: what should I do with them?

So far, I’ve spent four months as an editorial intern for cityseekr. When my parents decided to fly into the city a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to make sure the time we spent here together was worthwhile. I also wanted to show them everything this beautiful city has to offer.

So, what to do? Instead of walking to every major sight on our own, my parents convinced me to go on one of those super touristy hop-on, hop-off bus city tours. At first, thinking about boarding one of those buses and being degraded to a bloody tourist once again didn’t really appeal to me. I very much wanted to think of myself as a “local” during my last month here. Ultimately though, I decided to leave those silly resentments behind, and, since my parents were buying the $35 ticket, I agreed to become a real tourist once more and jumped onto the open-top bus.

And what can I say, it was actually a great experience! You can hop on the Open Top Sightseeing tour buses at any of the 20 stops that are spread out all over downtown and west San Francisco. With the ticket, which you can buy at any stop, you earn a 24-hour pass to get on and off the buses that come by every 20 minutes. Also, on each bus there is a tour guide that will supply you with entertaining stories and information concerning the area and the surrounding sights. Continue reading

Spotlight: Benny Gold

Striking Gold in the Heart of San Francisco

Streetwear boutique caters to the trendy young gent, carrying graphic t-shirts, button-ups, classic shoes, scarves, jackets, hats, even Benny Gold inscribed gold pens – Benny Gold has you covered from head to toe. Going for the Gold, the line has expanded to also include high quality denim, all natural body soaps, along with Jansport and Benny Gold collabo backpacks.

The concept behind the brand started with a sticker and a dream. Benny began posting stickers around town that said “Stay Gold.” Stay Gold to him is “a reminder that all the ideas and experiences that we hold dear are the real gold inside each of us” (bennygold.com).

Tired of working for other people, a very motivated Benny created a dope label that resides in a modern simplistic store front in the Mission district of San Francisco. Smack dab in the heart of hipsterdom, a more phentermine ideal location for a boutique of this caliber cannot be found. On his quest toward creative freedom, Benny Gold was born, and he has catapulted this brand into a highly sought-after one, not only in SF but worldwide. Continue reading

Postcards from San Francisco

Hello! My name is Ayeon Song and I’m currently working at cityseekr as an editorial intern. I am a participant of  the WEST Program, created by the Republic of Korea and the United States to train global leaders. I fell in love with San Francisco because of the kind people, beautiful scenery and delicious food. I love to experience new things, and I can’t wait to introduce you to my experience here in SF through the cityseekr blog. Carpe diem!

San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States; it’s famous for sights like Union Square, Alcatraz, Lombard Street and Coit Tower. But I think my favorite tourist attraction here is the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge was constructed by Joseph Baerman Strauss, a chief engineer who was ahead of his time. When it was believed that no one could build a bridge over the “Golden Gate” because of insurmountable difficulties, Strauss proved everyone wrong. Continue reading
